This is the follow up call I received after contacting the PA Department of Agriculture’s local appointed county Vet’s office regarding a local pet store in Hermitage, PA (Pet Supplies Plus) selling infant rabbits too young to be owned by unknowing pet owners. I went in one day and noticed an infant rabbit attempting to eat pellets out of a dish in a glass encasement. The rabbit was very frail, tiny, had crud in his eyes and snuffles (mucus in the nose). If snuffles gets bad enough, the bunny could die. I contacted a local rabbit rescue who told me to save the rabbit – worrying about refunds later, I did. When I did, the pet store staff brought out more infant rabbits from the back room. The rabbit rescue and I had to purchase these rabbits one by one just to save their lives. We were given no care instructions for the rabbits, not even commentary on them or what their dietary needs might be, or mentioning that they were showing signs of ill health. This pet store knew these baby rabbits were sick because when I, the customer, mentioned it, they said that they dumped antibiotics into the water for all the rabbits to drink. That can also be dangerous as healthy rabbits drinking the antibiotic water can build resistance to the antibiotics. This is a first hand witnessing of the tragic cycle of contributing to pet store animal abuse for profit. This is why they say to never buy an animal from a pet store because it allows them to continue doing this and you can’t save all the animals – however, I had a plan for a refund to ensure they would not make a profit on this. The fact that we bought the rabbits only makes a profit for the pet store and encourages the pet store to order more infant rabbits. If you rescue a pet from a pet store, You MUST contact their corporate customer service for a refund – keep your receipt and document your problem! I couldn’t allow this to happen so as a Law student I researched the laws and contacted my local humane society and Department of Agriculture. The USDA may refer you to your District Attorney’s appointed veterinarian for your area as some States’ USDA only oversees commercial livestock animals, not pet store domesticated animals. The Dept of Agriculture referred me Veterinarian who took down the info and this is the voice mail she left after a few days of investigating the pet store. The sale of unweaned rabbits (unweaned meaning any rabbit under the age of 2 months, or, 8 weeks) is illegal in the State of Pennsylvania, and other States likely have similar laws. See www.petstoreabuse.com for laws in your State.
Removing a rabbit, of any breed from its mother younger than 8 weeks can result in the infant rabbit’s poor health and even death. This is because rabbits acquire their immune system from their mother’s milk. Without it, they can easily acquire an infection, Upper Respiratory Infection, parasites, pastuerella, snuffles, diarrhea (can be deadly within hours for a rabbit) bacterial infections (including the gut – which is very dangerous for rabbits). These pet stores also give rabbits all kinds of treats and “trail mix” foods – this is also bad for rabbits of all ages. Just because humans like variety foods, doesn’t mean it’s good for bunnies. It can ball up in their system and they can die. If you see pet store abuse going on, contact your local humane society and your local Department of Agriculture. Don’t argue with the employees – they probably have no training on any of this and this is what they received in their shipments. Ask for their invoice of the animals (this pet store did not keep it). Try to be informative, follow up that they notified their “supplier” of live animals of the problem, print off the laws & give it to hem (they might be grateful for this because they surely don’t like bad PR!) and let them know you have notified the authorities to make sure their “supplier” of animals does not do this again.
